The Appalachian Festival

The Appalachian Festival 2014 began on Thursday, lasting three days, with films, discussion of social issues, stalls selling local produce and cool, wonderful music,which is marvelous and and amazing.

On Thursday, the film “Triple Divide” is showing in Palace Theater, 31 E.Main Street, Frostburg. There were a lot of people watching the film, including some children with their parents. The film is about “fracking” in Pennsylvania, which shows the process of shale gas extraction and its impact on the environment, especially on water sources. The “fracking” process pollutes the water and makes a bad impact on the land. As a result, the ecosystem is disturbed and the environment suffers a challenge so that the offspring will face a difficult situation. After watching the film, a child, about 8 years old, said, “ it is horrible! I want to drink the pure water in the future”. Of course, the state’s regulations and corporate responsibility for protecting the water is crucial, and they are supposed to be blamed. However, everyone is obligated to protect the resources.

     Following the educational and meaningful film, there is the economic analysis of shale gas development in Western Maryland on Friday afternoon. A professor in FSU delivers a discussion and provides an analysis, which was released by the Regional Economics Studies Institute about the impacts on the community,economic and so on. And the citizens there discuss about it positively.It is a big and important issue.The renowned storytellers also through their experiences to emphasize the importance of the gas issue.One of the storyteller,Silas House,the NEH chair in Appalachian Studies at Berea College in Berea,Ky,share his stories with the audience to stress the importance of the environment and the protection for it.The content of his books with his attitude to the natural world is also interesting and encouraging.The impact of the gas on the ecosystem is big and we must take measures to deal with that. Making money for drilling gas damages the water and land, which is bad for the benefits in the future.

The last day,in 7:30pm, Saturday, in the Palace Theatre,brings a lot of pleasure and happiness with the wonderful music.Jay Ungar and Molly Mason Band plays some country music, which is popular.There are a lot of people enjoying the concert and applauding together with the passion.It is not only a relaxation and celebration to the festival but also it is a kind of music culture. 

After the discussion of the social issue, people learn the fracking and the situation of water. Fracking is for the benefits of gas exploitation but not for the benefits in the long run. We often waster water,maybe not on purpose,and the industries for the sake of profits often sacrifice the environment,including the water, forest,land and so on.Everyone is supposed to protect the environment because our offspring need the pure resource to live.The meaningful festival lets us know the situation of the ecosystem and teaches us a lesson.
